The Chinese characters of "Human" and "Fire"

Traditionally the Chinese character of "Fire" (火, huo) is represented by the ideogram or picture of a flame (see diagram). A visit to the Hong Kong History Museum has changed my mind about that.

There is an exhibit about prehistoric human activities in Hong Kong. It shows an early man creating fire with two flintstones.

The Chinese character 火 (fire) consists of two parts: the human (人) and the two strokes components, which can be the abstraction of two flintstones.
A man (人, ren or human) with two flintstones-- that is the image of the Chinese character "fire"!

"Crystal Ox" Gazing

I am running around China and Hong Kong in the last few weeks. In Hong Kong, I see over 20 "2009 Year of Ox" fortune-telling books. Most are simply based on the 12 Chinese zodiac animals to "predict" the 2009 luck of people, though some use Immortal Wong Tai Sin, QMDJ and Plum-Flower.

Publishers of these 2009 fortune-telling books always try to be the first ones in the market to grab the market share. Those who had published before the sub-prime mortgage crisis are likely to predict "business as usual" like the global economy will be great. The ones that are published after the financial crisis is exposed are likely to predict the economy will not be "optimistic" or "challenging".

It is interesting to see most writers of these fortune-telling books will "review" and brag about their 2008 predictions. They simply ignore what they had missed and just focused on the "hits". Everyone makes tons of predictions and some will "hit" the target for sure. Very often, predictions are phrased in vague terms like "not optimistic" or "challenging", it can always be treated as a "hit" no matter what has happened.

Today is your lucky day, you can publish your own "2010 Fortune Book" with the following tips about how the predictions are made:
1. based on stars of annual or Purple White chart
2. making interpretations based on the jia-zi (binomial) of the year. For example, 2009 is ji-chou or earth-ox year. One can tell a long story based on this jia-zi.
3. based on the animal nature of the year (e.g. 2008 is year of rat, some writers will make a big fuss out of the rat's nature)
4. based on shen-sha like Grand Duke, San-sha (3-killings) and the like
5. based on the writer's own divination using Plum Flower, Yi-Jing and the like
6. based on astrological stars
7. based on QMDJ charts
8. simply based on the gut-feeling of the writer!

You may use a combinations or all of the above to write your 2010 Fortune book. Send me 10% royalty if you can! All proceed will go to charity.

When not to hire a Feng Shui Master

My previous message, "Grandma's Tou-Fu Dessert" is an example of personal luck overtakes the importance of Feng Shui.

In other words, when your luck is high (above average), you do not need a Feng Shui master to choose a site or house for you. You may throw a stone randomly and follow the landing direction of the stone and locate a property.

How do you know your luck is high or low? It is much easier to tell that your luck is low-- shortage of money, running into obstacles all the time, relationship problems, sickness, accidents or even death. If this were the case, you defintely need a Feng Shui master to help you. But chances are, you may pick a lousy master that makes your Feng Shui worse than before soliciting his/ her help. So you need to find someone who is proven and not just "famous".

When everything goes your way, money is not a problem for you, good health and you look forward to live your next day, you probably are in "above average" luck. You may pretty much close your eyes and pick a property and still enjoy good Feng Shui.

When you feel life is boring (or have time to think that your life is boring), it means you have a stable life and NOT in bad luck.

Very often people think their good luck will last forever. The lucky ones may have 10- 20 years of continuous good luck. Most will have short periods of 1 to 2 years good luck. It is difficult to achieve anything significant with short luck duration (as in annual lucks). You need at least one good 10-year luck to prosper. In Bazi or 4-Pillars, everyone shares the same annual luck but not 10-year lucks. 10-year lucks are determined by one's birth day and birth hour.

In Asia, it is common that a Feng Shui practitioner also knows Bazi reading. It is a routine to read the Bazi of a potential client before taking up a Feng Shui job. A practioner with integrity may turn down a FS assignment if he/she finds client's problem is due to destiny and not FS.

Grandma's Tou-fu Dessert

I am running around China and Hong Kong now. I stay with my brother while in Hong Kong.

One day, my brother and I were strolling around town. He suddenly exclaimed with joy, "'Grandma's Tou-Fu Dessert' has moved to here!".

"Grandma moves around a lot. She makes the best tou-fu dessert in town. There is always a long line in front of her store. There is always another tou-fu dessert store opens across her store, hoping to pick up those who can't wait." My brother said.

"You can see Grandma's price is HK$5 per bowl and the competition sells at $3. Yet there is no line in the competition's store."

Of course, we rush to Grandma and get a bowl of the tou-fu dessert.

"Why does Grandma move all the time?" I asked.

"Landlord finds Grandma doing great business and thinks she may stay even if the rent is raised. So Grandma moves and amazingly, her business is always great regardless where she moves to." My brother replied.

"What contributes to Grandma's success?" I asked myself.

It could be:
1. Grandma is in good luck period
2. Grandma's secret skill of making tou-fu dessert
3. Good Feng Shui (but this seems not the case here, Grandma just moves around, most of the time, move into the locations of failed business!)

Yesterday, I had a tou-fu dessert in another region of the city. The dessert tasted as great as Grandma's. The store is at the exit of a subway station (very good "water" or human traffic). But the store does not have a long line or doing as well as Grandma's.

So I conclude luck is more important than Feng Shui, just like the popular saying about the main determinants of destiny-- "Fate first, Luck second and third Feng Shui"

Do you think Grandma should hire a Feng Shui Master to select a store location for her?

More bang for your charity dollars or work

In last February I had written about the "8 monthly auspicious days" for doing charity to maximize your "karma credit" in every month.

Well, I know at least one person follows the advice. She writes:

"Thank you because we have been doing volunteer works and charity donations on the eight auspicious days you gave in last february. It works!!!! I feel better. I am in a better mood too. A very good friend of mine are doing it too. It´s fun, and we feel good doing it!!! Can we invite more people to do it? Is it not bad energy for us to share this knowledge? It´s good because the people we know can also enjoy sharing and feel good, right?"

Yes, you will get more blessing for sharing this knowledge, not to mention the extra bonuses of getting more karma credits. Karma credits can enhance your personal qi (energy) to fend off bad energies (bad luck) and attract positive energies.

Here I repost part of that February message with updated dates for you to do your good deeds.

According to Buddhism, every lunar month has eight auspicious days that you can take advantage of to enhance your good karma “credits”. When you do “good” or “bad” deed in these days, the karma points (good or bad) will be multiplied numerous times according to following formula.

FIRST DAY OF THE LUNAR MONTH
100 times karma credit: Ding-Huang Buddha day 定王佛日
-- 2008 dates: 9/29, 10/29, 11/28, 12/27
-- 2009 dates: 1/26, 2/25, 3/27, 4/25, 5/24, 6/23

8th DAY OF THE LUNAR MONTH
1000 times karma credit: Bhaisajya Guru Vaidurya Prabharajah Buddha day 藥師佛日
-- 2008 dates: 10/6, 11/5, 12/5
-- 2009 dates: 1/3, 2/2, 3/4, 4/3, 5/2, 5/31, 6/30

10th DAY OF THE LUNAR MONTH
100,000 times karma credit: A Thousand Buddhas in Good Kalpaa Buddha day 千佛日
-- 2008 dates: 10/8, 11/7, 12/7
-- 2009 dates: 1/5, 2/4, 3/6, 4/5, 5/3, 6/2

15th DAY OF THE LUNAR MONTH

-- 2008 dates: 10/13, 11/12, 12/12
-- 2009 dates: 1/10, 2/9, 3/11, 4/10, 5/9, 6/7

18th DAY OF THE LUNAR MONTH
10 Million times karma credit: Avalokitesvara- Great Compassion Bodhisattva day 觀世音菩薩日
-- 2008 dates: 10/16, 11/16, 12/15
-- 2009 dates: 1/13, 2/12, 3/14, 4/13, 5/12, 6/10

21st DAY OF THE LUNAR MONTH

Protection from fire

I have received an email from a student of my "Daoist Talismans for Feng Shui and Blessing" seminar:

================================

Hi Ken,

I had suffered an accident-- my bedroom had a fire. But I am very grateful because my family is fine and nobody got hurt.

Ah!! I had to tell you this-- I had bought the house-protection talisman that you brought us. I have put it on the window. I have put the talisman for Love, the " Daoist Holy Trinity" and "Saint Wong" pictures that you gave us as part of the Daoist Tailsman course on the dragon side of my bed and you know what? The fire had stopped at where the talisman and deity pictures were located!! For example, it did not burn my bed. People said that I was lucky because I have a wooden floor. The house may burn down.

The fire had burned the curtains, a love seat, my laundry and nothing else. I know I was lucky because my house faces 5-yellow disaster star this year!! Thank God we are alive!!!

Could you replace my burned talismans? I will make a donation to charity for the talismans if you like. I do know these talismans had helped. These talismans can stop the fire. Can you explain why the fire had stopped after burning the talisman and pictures of the deities?

==============================

Why did the fire stopped exactly at the talismans and deity pictures locations? I guess it is their way to show that you are blessed or they really care!

To satisfy your curiosity, I have posted the deity pictures mentioned in this blog. The "Daoist Holy Trinity" or San Qing, are the highest authority in Daoism. "Saint Wong" or Immortal Wong Tai Sin is a popular Daoist deity in Hong Kong and Southern China. St. Wong is also a Feng Shui Deity. You may print the pictures out for your protection. Please show respect and do not throw the picture into garbage can. Burn the picture if you no longer need it.

The 23rd day of the 8th lunar month is the birthday of Saint Wong. It happens to be today.

Advanced reminders for 2009 year of Ox

I keep receiving emails for help with remodeling precautions for this year and next year. Instead of answering individual emails, I post the info here.

Ji-chou ox year is 4 months from now. But it will be helpful to know the "forbidden locations" for construction ahead of time, so you can do it in 2008 instead of in 2009. Besides, areas that are "forbidden" this year are likely be "open" for constructions next year, so you can delay your remodeling project till next year.

Here are a recap of "forbidden zones" for 2008 Wu-zi year (ends at February 4, 2009):
===============================================
1. 5-yellow disaster star will be in the south. Sui-Po or "year breaker" will also be in the south or wu-mountain.
--- avoid digging or construction; avoid movements

2. Grand Duke or Tai Sui, the "ruler" of the year will be in zi mountain or in the North.
--- avoid digging or construction; you can sit on GD location but not facing it.

3. San Sha or 3-killings will be in the South (si, wu, ding mountains)
--- definitely avoid movement or digging here, Sui-po year breaker and 5-yellow disaster star are also in this sector!

4. "5-tiger sha" is in Wu, ding (South) and Wei(SW-S) mountains, the most vicious sha that attributes to multiple deaths and serious injuries or sickness.
-- definitely no digging or even putting heavy object on this area. This is the major reason that South side is the worst area to monkey around this year!. If you plan to do remodeling here, FORGET IT! WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR! If you have already dug and ran into problems, what can you do? There is not much you can do but praying for forgiveness and do more charity work than usual.

5. The auspicious 8-star (wealth) will be in the east and 9-purple star in the SE. You may want some movements here.

People with horse and mouse animal signs and were born in the first, fifth and eleventh months of the lunar calendar should avoid attending funeral for the year.
============================END OF 2008

Ji-chou earth-ox year will begin at Feb. 5, 2009, the following are the precautions:

Ji-chou year is a strong yin-earth year as both Ji and Chou are yin earth. People whose favorable element is earth will have great luck this year, especially if earth is your wealth element. If you unfavorable element is earth, then you better lay low for the year.

Chou is one of the 3-penalties (3P) elements of wei-chou-xu, so if this annual luck and/or your 10-year luck or your native chart bring together all the 3P elements-- you better pray only positive fame and not injuries/surgery to come. OR take my upcoming "Destiny Management" course on how to handle this situation.

The annual chart for 2009 is: (top is south, bottom is north)

8 4 6
7 9 2
3 5 1

A. 5-yellow star will be in the North. Sui-Po or year breaker will also be in the SW-S or Wei-mountain.
--- avoid digging or construction; avoid movements

B. Grand Duke or Tai Sui, the "ruler" of the year will be in Chou mountain (NE-N).
--- GD and 5-yellow disaster star are very close to each other! It is possible to dig on both unintentionally. Avoid digging or construction; you can sit on GD location but not facing it.

C. San Sha or 3-killings will be in the whole East sector (Jia, Mao and Yi mountains)
--- definitely avoid movement or digging here

D. "5-tiger sha" is in Chen, Xun and Si mountains (SE region), the most vicious sha that attributes to multiple deaths and serious injuries and sickness.
-- definitely no digging or even moving heavy object to this area. Chen mountain SE-E) overlap with one of the San Sha, making it the most dangerous sector to dig for this ox year.

E. The auspicious 8-star (wealth) will be in the SE, but part of the sector is Chen mountain and Si mountains (part of 5-tiger sha)! So if may want to put your enhancements ONLY in Xun mountain (SE)! If you are not sure, put NO movement there. The little wealth generated does not worth the risk!

The relative "safe" and prosperous sector for this year is NW with 1-white career star.

People with ox and ram animal signs and were born in the third, sixth and 12th months of the lunar calendar should avoid attending funeral for the ox year. Lunar month is about one month slower than the western calendar.

What can you do if you must do constructions in the forbidden zones? Hire a good Feng Shui master to do a auspicious date-selection and follow certain procedures. Event like this needs some "bleeding" (of money) or exchange of energy with the universe, in order to settle your karma debt.

Obama and 3-Penalties

(Click on the image to enlarge it for reading)

Someone has posted Obama's birth certificate in the web. It matches my estimation of his birth hour--- 7pm, Xu or dog hour.

I've estimated it is Xu hour because Obama rises to the top pretty quickly, so he must have some sort of 3-penalties. And his charts shows he has a "built-in" 3-penalties. Also Xu hour matches the predictions of his ZWDS chart too.

Enclosed is the 4-Pillars chart of Obama. You can match his life events with the links below.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama
http://www.biography.com/featured-biography/barack-obama/index.jsp

Obama's year and month pillars "fan yin" or fight against each other from top to bottom, indicates an unstable and difficult childhood.

The void branches are interesting! Void means nothing or "not there". Obama has void branches in both spouse and children palace. His wife Michelle could have be a goner easily, had the day branch si not been the void branch. Same to Obama, he would have suffered many accidents and surgeries.

It is possible that Michelle Obama may have a "tough" or "equally-jinxing" 4P chart herself (I've not checked it yet) which may even out with her husband's.

Void branches at children palace or hour pillar may mean-- the day-master (Obama) has little or no karma with children (either little relationship, physically separated or children die prematurely) or does not get support from children during old age. He is unlikely to have male heir.

You may notice that major events are likely to happen when Obama's 3-penalty elements show up again in annual luck. His father had died of an auto accident in Xu year (1982). Xu is part of the 3-penalties element.

Also when hai or pig year comes, it clashes with his "bloody knife" or spouse palace. His "mother star" resides in spouse palace, hinting close relationship or significant influence on him. Obama's mother had died in a hai year (1995) with ovarian cancer (sickness matches the hai element).

See if you can track down his "sources" of current power lucks-- the power that may propel him to become the first black president of the United States. It is in the branches.... it is pretty powerful. But you may need my "4P Bootcamp" manual to figure that out.

Obama's hidden potential for power and leadership is much stronger than what he has shown externally. His "power luck" runs for 20 years and will be gone when he reaches 60 years old.

Obama's 3-penalties seems to affect his close relatives more--- father and mother had died relatively young. Too bad that I am older than Obama and may not live long enough to see how his 3-penalties affect his own wife and children.

3-penalties jinx close relatives more than the day-master. However, 3-penalties can be positive under certain conditions.

There is a "loner with few relatives" (gua-su) shen-sha in his hour pillar. Hour pillar stands for the last stage of his life. So this hints that he may live alone with most close relatives passed away or live far away when he gets old.

Also, if Obama gets elected, 2009 (ji-chou year) does not seem to be his lucky year!! Annual Ji (his bi-jian, peer or competitor) may snatch his "guan" or power. This may mean losing his presidency (a possible death or scandal, as chou is also a 3-penalties element), facing tough competitions or pressure from peers, OR disgraced in his old job if not elected. But the probability of occurrence seems low as his overall current 10-year luck is still positive. Besides, he has both Tian-De and Yi-De Nobleman stars to pull him out of trouble.

I deliberately read only part of the chart, so that you may have fun doing your own reading and interpretations.

Month Breaker (Yue Po) Effect?

Today is August 30 and coincidentally, also the 30th day of the lunar month. In terms of Chinese calendar, the current month is the 7th month of the year, geng-shen (metal monkey) month and the day is ren-yin (water tiger).

According to date-selection rule, a tiger-day in a monkey month is considered as a "month breaker" day-- inauspicious because tiger clashes monkey in the Chinese zodiac.

Here is an extract from my "Practical Date-Selection Methods" manual:

Month Breaker
(Yue Po)

If you use this day:
Frustrations. Things do not flow.
• Arguments and conflicts.

• Business negotiations will be unsuccessful.

• Contracts and marriages are unsuccessful.

Today I read the web edition of Hong Kong's Ming Pao newspaper. It has a heading of:

"Within 6 hours, 4 Mental patients jumped to their death "

http://hk.news.yahoo.com/article/080830/4/7yve.html

(in Chinese)

Here is the info, on August 30, 2008:

2:23am-- 36 years old man jumped to his death from a building

(Chou hour)
4:50am-- 48 years old man jumped to his death from a building

(yin hour)
5:21am -- 49 years old man jumped to his death from a building

(mao hour)
8:30am -- 37 years old woman jumped from third floor of a building, survived

(chen hour)

The incidents happened in different districts of Hong Kong.

Some striking data emerged:

1. All are mental patients, so they were not rational and were more likely affected by external forces like magnetism or planetary influences.

2. Two victims are at the age of "violating Tai Sui" or Grand Duke (36 and 48 years old). The remaining two are just one year after violating Grand Duke.

3. All incidents happened in the morning.

Are these the effects of "month breaker" or "Grand Duke violation" or just coincidence?

"iPhone Girl" and 3-penalties

Check out the amazing story of a mysterious Chinese factory girl, the "iPhone Girl":

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26421622/

Her pictures are unintentionally show up in an iPhone purchased at UK. In less than a week, she becomes a global internet sensation and the top 10 searches of search engines. There are fan websites setup for her both inside and outside China.

There is a saying in 4-Pillars, "A gentleman will not be prosperous without being penalized."

Very often, we found the very rich or successful persons have a semi-3-penalty in their 4P charts.

People with overnight fame and/or success, sometimes, are due to a 3-penalties formed with luck period/s in their 4P charts.

However, 3-penalties can also cause serious injuries or even death to the person OR his/her close relatives.

When will a 3-penalties be positive or negative to a person? It all depends on the relationship between branch elements involved in the 3-penalties and the day-master
(Take my "4P Bootcamp" if you want to know more).

So far I have not found the iPhone Girl's birthday.

Digging in the south side of your house?

I went to an eye exam today and saw the eye doctor walk on "4" legs (crutches). Out of curiosity, I have asked him how he got hurt.

"A few weeks ago, I dug up a large tree trunk in my garden."

Before he continued, I had interrupted, "Is the garden in the south side of your house?"

"How do you know?" Asked the doctor.

"
Chinese secret!" I answered.

"
My kids want to keep the tree trunk, so I have stored it in the garage." He continued.

"
A few days later, I walked through the passage of the garage which normally I could walk with my eyes closed. I got trapped down by the tree trunk and broke my ankle!"

I told him it is not a good idea to dig in the South this year. The energy there is not too friendly.

A student's friend was building a front porch in the southern side of his property earlier this year. Recently a cyst had grown on his neck and needs a minor surgery to remove it. A supposedly simple procedure got complications with blood problem and infection.

For the
Rat year (2008), the south has the following negative energies:
: 5 –yellow Disaster Star

: San Sha (Three Killings)

---
Bing/S1 – Pinch Sha
---
Wu/S2 – Disaster Sha
---
Ding/S3 – Pinch Sha
:
Wu Dao Ti Sha – Wu/S2*
:
Jia Dao Ti Sha – Ding/S3*
:
Sui Po (Wu/S2) (year breaker, opposite side of Grand Duke)

With unusually high concentration of negative energies in one direction, you should avoid renovations or earth-digging in the south this year. If you have no choice, you need to do a good date-selection to mitigate the effects.

One may ask, I know people who had dug in the south and still have no problem. Yes, no problem YET. There are cases where the effect of violation is delayed even to a few years later. Some teachers describe these energies are like "fair weather friends"-- they ignore or even enhance your luck IF your current luck is good. BUT they will step on you all over if your current luck is on the low side. OR sometimes they "ambush" you when your good luck is gone!

Am I dead or alive?

While surfing the internet, I suddenly am not sure if I am dead or alive. A woman in Veracruz of Mexico, claims that she had taken my "Daoist Talisman" and "Practical Date-Selection Methods" seminars and even put my logo in her website without my authorization.

Normally, people claim to be the students or lineage holders of DECEASED masters if they are not really the students of the deceased. Maybe I am dead already or maybe this woman has mistaken that I was dead.

To make sure that I am still alive, I have pinched myself and it hurts.

Ms. Claudia xxxxxxxx, please remove the logo of "International School of Feng Shui" from your website. I have no record of you attending any of my class anywhere in the world.

Thank you for reading!

"I can't burn my mama!"

I was in Mexico City teaching "4-Pillars Bootcamp" last weekend.

Owning to the summer tourist season, the only hotel room that I can get is located at San Sha (3-killings) and 5-yellow disaster direction!

The first two nights I had dreams of long-deceased relatives and a grad-school classmate. I rarely dreamed of deceased people and let alone dreaming of them 2 nights in a row.

The third night, before going to bed, I saw a 5-inches big black moth on the window edge.

Chinese believe that their deceased relatives, especially the newly deceased, come back in the form of flying insects like butterflies and moths, to visit their love ones.

I was worried if anything happened to my own family members due to the dreams about dead people and especially this mysterious appearance of a black moth.

I have called my relatives in the states and Hong Kong. They are all safe and sound.

So I have called a Mexican friend about the symbolic meaning of black moth to them.

"Black moth or butterfly flying into your house means bad luck or even the death of a family member. We normally catch and burn it to avoid bad luck." My amigo said.

"I can't burn my mama! The black moth could be her visiting me-- though it is a long flight for her to fly from Hong Kong to Mexico City!" Said I.

To prevent some worrisome amigos from burning this black moth, I have captured it with a plastic bag and release it outside the hotel.

The next day, which happened to be the second day of the "4P Boot-camp" seminar, something unexpected happened.

At the end of the day, a new student come into the class! This is very unusual for someone to join a class when 66% of the class was already done. It can also be the good work of Monica, my local organizer.

This "unexpected income" means 10 tanks of gas for my car!

The following evening, I found the same black moth on my door edge! This became very freaky to me. Is this really my deceased mother visiting me? I must have been a bad boy lately.

Anyway, to avoid the black moth being killed, I telepathically told it, "Hi amigo! Go away if you don't want to be a roasted moth!" Then I have used a stick to drive it away. It has disappeared ever since.

To my Mexican amigas and amigos who are reading this, I cannot guarantee you getting 10 tanks of gas when you set free a black moth or butterfly. But letting the "bad luck" or butterfly/ moth fly away is much better than burning the "bad luck" in your house!

It is bad karma to kill any living being, especially those who do no harm to you. On the other hand, one kind deed can potentially mean the difference between going to heaven or hell! There are stories in Buddhist literature about some people who had escaped hell due to one simple random act of kindness to a small animal or insect.

Adiós!

The big black cat and the baby cricket

If you follow my blog, you probably know that I become an "accidental" owner of a 3 years old big black cat a few weeks ago.

This cat looks like a shrunk black panther. Its look is pretty intimidating to small kids. It can run 20 feet in half a second to her food bowl when she is hungry.

My kids talk to her (a female cat) in English, but I talk Chinese to her, hopefully she will become a smart bilingual feline. Her name is too complicated for me, so I just call her "Meow-meow".

It has the bad habit of drinking water from the offering cups of my earth-god altar. It could have been her death warrant if we send her back to the animal shelter. Being relatively old, big and black, she is likely euthanized than adopted again. So she is either stay with us or in heaven.

Last night, I saw some amazing interactions between this cat and a baby cricket. The cricket is less than 1 cm. in length.

When Meow-meow saw the cricket, instead of doing an ambush strike that most cats will do, she gently touched the cricket with her paw. The baby cricket, probably has never seen a cat before, simply jumped a few inches. She again gently and slowly touched the cricket. Again the cricket jumped a few inches.

At this moment, I thought Meow-meow may stretch her tongue and sweep the cricket into her mouth. Again, she just chased the cricket slowly and let it run away.

This is a good cat with a gentle heart! I have almost sent her back to the animal shelter to face the Lord!

Just like human beings, you cannot judge an animal by how it looks or judge a person by his/ her external appearance. This is why I resist learning or teaching face-reading. I do not want any preconceptions of how a face looks to color my perceptions of and interactions with people.

The Ultimate "Iron Plate Divination" secrets

A few new Chinese books on "Iron Plate Divination" or "Tie Ban Shen Shu" (TBSS) were published in the last 12 months.TBSS is probably the most hyped Chinese fortune-telling method with BS like that only "X" number of people can learn it (x is less than 10) for the whole universe.

Basically, TBSS is a compendium of thousands of oracle-like "comments". The methods or formula to "retrieve" these comments from the compendium are considered "top secrets".

In Hong Kong, there are "masters" who charges from HK$50k to 200k (US$5300 to $25,000) for a reading with "waiting period" from 6 months to a year! And they do not just take any John or Jane from the street. You need to be "referred" by someone they know.

Recently, an online forum in a south-eastern Asian country reports about someone has paid about US$500 (about one month salary of a local engineer) to an online personality for a TPSS reading.

After waiting for 3 weeks, the payee just got a 3-pages report that looks like generated by a Zi Wei Dou Shu computer program.

A few years ago, a Hong Kong radio program had done an exposé on TBSS fortune-telling.

The radio reported that the reason that there is a long waiting period is not really that the "masters" have so many clients on their waiting lists, they just need the time to do background investigation on the clients!

With the high consultation fee, they can afford to hire private investigators to dig up info on the clients. Not to mention internet search will also provide tons of info for free.

When the client is referred by someone they know, they can tap into the channels for information tooSo the common characteristics of these readings are: past events and family relationship predictions are very accurate. Future predictions are given in very ambiguous fashion and are much less accurate.

There are some fortune-tellers who can do something similar by using witchcraft (like using "child ghost"). But their future predictions are pretty inaccurate.

Please note that I do not mean TBSS is fake-- just the probability of you seeing the real thing is pretty low.

In search of a better (Feng Shui) mouse-trap

A student asks me if he should take someone's "Hi-Hi-Hi Feng Shui" and "La-La-La Feng Shui" courses (course titles withheld to preserve the integrity of the original methods).

"Take the courses if your father owns a non-U.S. bank". I told the student.

"Besides, you have taken quite a few Feng Shui courses! You may already have the best Feng Shui mouse-traps without knowing."

To my dismay, this student's father really owns a non-U.S. bank! So I need to explain further.

"Hi-Hi-Hi" method was originally designed for fast-changing battlefield environment and "La-La-La" method was designed for divination of daily events. Either method can easily take someone a life-time to master.

To apply a method in a new field that is not originally designed for may need more cautions and time to be proven. Also the credibility of the source of such new methods needs to be considered too.

My personal bias is: I tend to be on the conservative side. "Discoveries" in Chinese metaphysics can easily take 50+ to hundred years to be "proven" and/ or widely accepted.

While these methods may somehow be directly or indirectly related to Feng Shui, it may not be the most efficient way (cost or time-wise) to tackle Feng Shui problems.

"Hi-Hi-Hi" and "La-La-La" methods are not easy to learn even assuming cost is not a consideration. If these methods were easy and powerful, it should be "Hi-Hi-Hi" and "La-La-La" and not Flying Star Feng Shui, dominate the current Feng Shui field.

To learn or use Feng Shui, you may want to go straight to traditional Feng Shui courses like San Yuan, San He or the like directly.

The same logic can also be applied to Bazi (4P) and ZWDS. Both are also somehow related to Feng Shui. One may apply these methods to Feng Shui if by chance one had taken these classes already.

But to take a class on 4P or ZWDS or "Hi-Hi-Hi" or "La-La-La" because you want to do Feng Shui, is like taking a guitar class because you want to learn typing.

There may be new or attractive claims on "Hi-Hi-Hi" or "La-La-La" Feng Shui that may be too much to resist. I cannot help or advise you on those claims. But again, all I can say is:

"Take the courses if your father owns a non-U.S. bank".

For those who have a poor dad, you may want to do some "mining" with your old Feng Shui course manuals instead. Very often, people take a course, get excited and then shelve the course materials without testing or trying it.

I had the same "better mouse-trap syndrome" when I was young. Instead of examining and studying of what I already have, I tried to look for a "better mouse-trap" to "spare" me of the hard work required to learn. The result was wasting tons of money and time chasing and buying repackaged or recycled "mouse-traps".

The $250 Million question in forecasting (astrology)......

Lately, an old argument pops up in different discussion forums -- can astrology predict the life events (like marriage, sickness, accidents, wealth...) of a person?

This question used to be the million dollars question, but due to inflation and devaluation of U.S. dollar, it becomes a $250 million question.

There are two major perspectives on this question.
First one is shared by those masters or practitioners who incline to wear the "scientific hat" in explaining things. I call them the "trendy guys".

The trendy guys said that astrological methods like 4P and ZWDS cannot really predict when someone marries, gives births, gets sick or dies and the likes. These methods just give a "trend" of someone's luck or the ups and downs of personal energy patterns.

The second camp is the "intuition guys". They will say "yes" to the question. Indeed you can predict life events of your clients to a certain extent PROVIDED the client and you (the astrological reader) have affinity or "feel" with each other. Simply put, if there is "click" between the two parties, the practitioner's intuition will make correct predictions.

"Hi Ken, which camp do you belong to? "

(Put on my "Ken Solomon" or smart-ass hat)

"I belong to both camps". When there is no "click" between me and the client, the reading becomes a "trend analysis". When there is affinity, whatever mumble jumbo I utter will fit perfectly, even when there are data errors!

Here is my $250 million to you, good enough to buy a loaf of bread in Zimbabwe.
